30 Ways in 30 Days to Find Your Peak – Day 11: Write Your Personal Mission Statement

by Sean Mathena

Welcome Back! If you are just getting started, I suggest you go back and review the previous posts in the series here.

Write Your Personal Mission Statement

A large percentage of companies have a mission statement.  A mission statement keeps an organization on track, and provides a direction for the company.

A personal mission statement is a bit different than a corporate mission statement, but the idea is the same.

Your personal mission statement should clearly state what you want to focus on and where you want to go at this point in your life.

When coming up with your personal mission statement, you don’t want to approach this subject lightly.  You want to give this plenty of thought and come up with a simple and clear statement.  Ideally your personal mission statement should be about three to five sentences.

You can find a pretty good site to help you here.  It requires you register, but the tool is pretty good.  It asks some probing questions and then builds the basic structure of your personal mission statement.  I found that the final statement needs to be tweaked quite a bit, but if you don’t know where to start, this will give you some good ideas.

Action Steps

For today, I want you to find someplace quiet and spend some time writing your personal mission statement.  As I said above, this shouldn’t be taken lightly.

This should be thought of as somewhat of a living document.  As you progress in your life and career, you mission statement will likely change.  Actually it might even change as you go further through this program.

After you have come up with your personal mission statement, write it down in a place you can reference it often.  It should be a guiding force in your life.

Once you have done this, think about sharing it with the ones closest to you.  You might even want to come up with a family mission statement.  This can be a powerful tool for bringing families together and setting everyone on the same path.
