Being the new year, there is a lot of talk about what we want to accomplish in the upcoming months. However, there is not a lot of talk about being grateful for what we already have and have achieved.
While we always should be striving for more in our life, you need to realize that you already have achieved a level to which many people around the world will never reach. Just being able to read this post and understand its meaning puts you ahead of most of the world.
Because of this, we all need to adopt an “attitude of gratitude”.
I first heard of this concept from Anthony Robbins on his “Get the Edge” tape series. He advocates taking time out each day and purposely thinking about all the things that you are grateful for in your life. Start first with the obvious things, your family, your friends, then keep moving out further to our neighbors, the fact you live where you live. You also need to recognize things such as the fact you woke up this morning, you aren’t hungry, and you have a roof over your head. Keep it going until you can’t think of anything else, you will be surprised at how long it takes!
Oprah talks about keeping a gratitude journal. She says each day write down one thing that you are thankful for, no matter how small. If you do this, at the end of the year, you will have 365 things that you are thankful for in your life.
I have been doing this along with reviewing my goals. Each morning when I am getting ready, I not only review my goals, but I think about what I am thankful for in my life. Some mornings I come up with more than other mornings, but I always can come up with several things each morning.
Remember, even when you think that everything is going wrong, and life is beating you down, there are many people out there that would love to only have your problems. So each day, while striving to reach those goals, take a bit of time to remember all of the goals in your past you have already reached, while you are thinking about how nice it will feel when you are doing the same thing a year from now with your current goals!
