My Favorite Quotes

by Sean Mathena

Have you ever had a specific quote or poem that stuck with you for some reason?  I have that all the time, and in the past I have shared my favorite inspirational movie scenes and it has been the most viewed post on this site.

Today, I want to share with you some of my favorite quotes (and a couple short poems) of all time.  Please feel free to add to these in the comments if you have some good ones that you want to share!

Also, please don’t forget to take my survey, I really appreciate the feedback I have gotten so far, and it will probably change the direction of the site a bit, so please go and give me your opinion, it won’t take long (only five questions).

“We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.
–Unknown

“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

– Peter Drucker

“You can still smell the roses when you are running with them in your hand.”

– Garth Brooks

“Most people fail in life because they major in minor things.”

-Anthony Robbins

“Let others lead small lives, but not you. Let others argue over small things, but not you. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.”

–Jim Rohn

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

“There is a difference in knowing your path and walking it”

-Morpheus

“Most people’s lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group.”

-Anthony Robbins

“You can’t change the force or direction of the winds, but you can always change your sails”

-Jim Rohn

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE NO. 1

Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that’s first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don’t ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.

Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he’s got to play from the ground up-from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That’s O.K. You’ve got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you’ve got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you’re lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.

Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization-an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win-to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don’t think it is.

It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That’s why they are there-to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules-but to win.

And in truth, I’ve never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn’t appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.

I don’t say these things because I believe in the “brute” nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious.

-Vince Lombardi

“A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.”

-Tim Ferriss

“Live with passion!”

-Anthony Robbins

And finally, “Don’t forget to respond to my survey!

-Sean Mathena

I love quotes and have them plastered all over my vision board. Here are a couple of my favorites:

“It doesn’t matter if you are always right. It matters that you are always moving.” Seth Godin

“Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.” Annette Funicello

“The question isn’t who is going to let me. It’s who is going to stop me.’ Ayn Rand

I love quotes. I always use them to make my points. Some of my favorites are:

“Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.” Tom Lehrer

“Scratch where it itches.” I don’t know who said it. :~

“If you don’t have anything nice to say to someone/something don’t say anything at all” Again I don’t know who said it but it’s really nice.
