5 Life Lessons from Charlie Sheen #Winning

by Sean Mathena

As kids, we’re taught to learn from our mistakes—figure out what we did wrong so we don’t do it again. As an adult, I’ve realized that it’s also possible to learn from other people’s mistakes. Over the past few weeks, Charlie Sheen’s shenanigans have caused a media frenzy. Some people think he’s funny, most people think he’s nuts, but I think we should all learn a thing or two from his crazy antics.

Lesson #1: Everyone is replaceable.

Charlie Sheen is definitely a talented actor. He’s been in some big-name movies and television shows—Platoon, Wall Street, Young Guns, Men at Work, Spin City and, of course, Two and a Half Men, just to name a few. He’s been nominated for Emmy awards and Golden Globes, but truth be told—he’s just a regular person like you and me. Even though Two and a Half Men was one of the most popular comedies of the past decade, CBS and Warner Brothers fired Charlie after his craziness and badmouthing got out of hand. Don’t ever think that you’re too good to be replaced. Someone else out there would be more than happy to have your job.

Lesson #2: No matter what line of work you’re in, your personal life can affect your career.

You don’t have to be famous for your personal life to affect your career. It’s safe to assume that if you go around hiring escorts, assaulting people, destroying hotel rooms and breaking the law in other various ways, you can be dismissed from your job. If you’re self-employed, your erratic behavior can cause you to lose your customers’ trust and most likely lose your customers outright. Watch what you do, watch what you say, watch what you blog. You don’t want to lose your income because of your own stupid behavior.

Lesson #3: Just say no to drugs.

Nancy Regan said it best back in the 1980s—Just Say No. Are drugs worth it? Looking at Charlie should give you the answer.

Lesson #4: Money can’t buy happiness.

Charlie Sheen has starred in enough hit movies and TV shows to pad his bank account quite nicely, but he’s been married three times and has five children. He was one of the celebrity clients of the well-known Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss in the 1990s; he’s had drug overdose scares; he’s been in and out of rehab and had countless brushes with the law. Apparently all the money in the world couldn’t have helped him out.

Lesson #5 Make the best of a bad situation.

Most Americans have a secret fascination with gossip and scandal, and Charlie Sheen is taking full advantage. He may have gotten fired from Two and a Half Men, but his self-made Ustream web show Sheen’s Korner generates over 100,000 viewers at a time. He’s selling T-shirts with his new catch phrases, “Tiger’s Blood,” and “Winning” and he’s even launched a national tour called Charlie Sheen Live: My violent torpedo of truth/defeat is not an option. He might be insane, but going from unemployed to entrepreneur in a matter of weeks is living proof that’s making the best of a bad situation.
