Are You Too Complacent?

by Sean Mathena on June 11, 2010

One of the greatest enemies of success is complacency.  You get to a point in your career, life, relationship, etc., and you just stop.  You have had some modicum of success in an area, you get comfortable, and you stop pushing forward, stop striving to do better.  This usually happens just before you have a big breakthrough.

Growth is uncomfortable.  It requires you to step outside of your comfort zone and do things you normally would not do; but the results are always worth it.  If you look at elite athletes, really elite athletes like Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and the Williams sisters, arguably the best in the world in their respective sports, they never stop training.  Even though they have reached levels that no one has ever reached, they still know they can get better.  They spend top dollar on the best trainers in the world, and practice hours everyday.  They are definitely not complacent, and because of this, they are the best.  So if they still push forward, why are you still sitting there?

Whatever area you are working in there are coaches, training courses, and seminars to help you out.  You should be doing something everyday to move forward even if it is just keeping up with the developments in your industry.

This is another area where setting goals helps.  You should set goals that take you out of your comfort zone while still being achievable.  By doing this consistently, you are always striving to get better in each area.  Your goals should touch every area of your life, not just your work life.  You should have financial goals, spiritual goals, relationship goals, and family goals just to name a few.  They should be written, measurable, and achievable.

Success is not a destination, it is a journey that you continue on your entire life.  So don’t ever stop striving to achieve more.  Set your goals, write them down, and get back to work!
