In keeping with the theme of goals, I thought I would talk a little bit about taking action. I was discussing the importance of setting written goals with some people last night, and as always there were a couple of naysayers in the group. They said things like “I am too old to do these things.” and “The goals that I want to accomplish can’t be done.” I reminded them of the old saying, “If you think you can, or if you think you can’t, you are exactly right.” Even worse than their negative thinking was the fact that they hadn’t even done anything to prove or disprove their thoughts!
One of the people had wanted to start a women’s retreat, and said it would never make enough money to support itself. How did she know this, had she done some research, had she called other similar businesses and talked to them about their experience? No. This was just an assumption. No action had been taken.
If you set your goals and never do anything to move towards them, then they are not really goals now are they? I asked if she had written goals and she admitted she did not, however, she had in the past and said that when she did, they always got accomplished some how. Why did she stop if it worked so well?
The message here is don’t just make your goals this week and put them in a drawer; put them somewhere you can see them every day, and resolve to do something each day to move you closer to achieving them. This could be something as simple as making a phone call or doing online research, but if you take action everyday, you will be surprised at how quick you tick them off your list.
What are some ways that you keep your goals fresh in your mind throughout the year?
