Happy 2011 everyone!! I hope everyone had a great holiday season and is ready to get back to work. If you are anything like me, I ate way too much, stayed up way to late, and worked out way to little. Today is a new day though and it is time to get back on track and make 2011 the best year yet!
How do we do that?
Goals of course!
If you haven’t came up with your goals for this year, now is the time. Every year I take the last week of the year and lay out the goals I want to accomplish for the coming year. This year was no exception, and in the spirit of being more transparent, I will share them with you in this post. But before I do, I want to give you a refresher on what it take to set meaningful and achievable goals.
Written
If your goals are not written, they are not goals, they are dreams. Let me say that again, if your goals are not written, they are not goals, they are dreams. I cannot stress this enough, you MUST write your goals down. After you write them down, make sure you put them somewhere that you can see them EVERYDAY. I always tape mine to my mirror in the bathroom so I see them and review them every morning while I am getting ready. Why do you think resolutions never get accomplished? Because people forget about them! So write them down and review them everyday.
Attainable
You goals also must be attainable. Now I am not saying don’t set high goals for yourself, just make sure they are possible to achieve. If you are 5′ 5″ and 300lbs, you should not set the goal to play in the NBA All-Star game at the end of the year. I have set some pretty ambitious goals over the years, some I have achieved and some I have not, but I always make sure it was at least possible. So make your goals huge, but make them possible!
Measurable
Your goals have to be measurable. What this means is you don’t want to set a goal such as “I want to lose weight”. What does that mean? One pound? Two-hundred pounds? As you can see it is not measurable. A better goal would read “I will lose 20 pounds of fat.” Whatever the goal, it needs to be measurable so you will know exactly when you achieve it.
So just remember the acronym W. A. M. when it comes to setting your goals and you will have a great 2011!
*Bonus Tips*
The above are the minimum when it comes to setting your goals for the New Year, but who wants to just do the minimum? Because no one wants to just do the minimum, I decided to add a couple of bonus tips that will supercharge your goals this year.
Baby Steps
Each of your goals should be broken down, if possible, into baby goals. These should be small enough that you will see some type of progress as often as practicable. Using our 20 pounds of fat weight loss example, you might break it down into the following goals:
- Join a gym
- Get my body fat measured
- Get a personal trainer
- Walk a mile on the treadmill
- Run a mile on the treadmill
- Put a nutrition plan together
- Run 5k
- Etc,
By breaking your goals down into smaller bite size chunks, you will see progress which will motivate you to keep on going. There is nothing like the feeling of crossing something off of your list!
Commitment
One thing that will be a huge motivator for some people is knowing that other people know you are trying to achieve your goal. Sometimes just knowing this will make you want to reach your goal so you aren’t embarrassed by not reaching it. There are many different ways to do this, you could tell a close friend, maybe even make it a contest to see who can achieve their goals first. There are also several sites on the Internet where you can join up with others trying to reach the same goal and help motivate each other. Whatever you do, make sure it will help your commitment to the goal.
So following on my last tip, I have decided that this year I am going to post my top ten goals for the year and update everyone throughout the year on my progress, and the specific steps I am going to take to reach my goals.
- Max out my retirement accounts
I almost made it this year, but some miscalculations prevented me from completely maxing it out. This year I am making some adjustments and should be able to hit this one pretty easily. - Spend three weeks on vacation in Australia
We actually lived in Sydney for a few months and still have good friends over there. We are planning on spending a month over there this summer (US) while the kids are out of school. This will take some planning and saving though, so I will keep you posted on the plans. - Get my body fat to 12%
This is going to be a bit of a challenge because I love to eat and drink. I just took measurements at the beginning of the year (first baby goal achieved) and rang in at a whopping 24%, so I am going to have to lose half of my body fat over the year. Just as a point of reference, I am 6′ 4″ and 234lbs. I will also update everyone on my progress here. Another baby goal related to this one is I want to run the NYC Marathon this year. I have registered for it, but I won’t know until April if I have been chosen, but as soon as I know, you will know. - Become conversationally fluent in Spanish
I live in Texas, so speaking Spanish will really come in handy. While I can get by in a Spanish speaking country as far as finding the bathroom and ordering a meal, I want to be able to strike up a conversation and understand what people are saying around me. My main tool for this is going to be the Rosetta Stone products. My eight year old daughter is going to be learning with me, so I know I can’t let her down! - Learn to play piano
Yes, before you say anything, I know this is not really a measurable goal. However, I have smaller goals that will be very measurable, and I really see this as an ongoing goal since when you play an instrument you don’t ever really finish learning. I do want to learn well enough by the end of the year that I can sit down and entertain guests on the piano at our Christmas party. This means one of my baby goals is actually getting a piano. - Finish 50 Best Pictures
One of my lifetime goals is to watch all of the Best Picture Academy Award winners. Last year my goal was to have finished half of them, which I did. As a point of reference, after this years award ceremonies there will have been 83 winners. By the end of the year I want to have finished at least 50 of them. This means I need to finish watching 9 movies this year. - Have 5000 subscribers to Find Your Peak
Here is where you can help.
If you are reading this, please sign up for my mailing list or my RSS feed. I am going to measure this using my RSS feed which includes my mailing list subscribers. I would recommend the mailing list. I have some special things in mind for this year for my mailing list subscribers, so if you are not signed up, you will be left out. Also, I won’t inundate your inbox with a ton of emails. You will get a notice when I post something on this blog, and maybe an email or two extra and that is it. If it gets to be too much you can always just hit the unsubscribe button! - Break 90 in golf
This also might be a bit difficult, but if it gets me on the course more have I really failed? As a point of reference, I shoot around 110 now, and I played golf maybe 5 times last year. I have already joined a golf club, so I either get out there and play, or my money goes to waste since I committed to a year contract. - Travel to South America
This is probably a slam dunk since I am slated to go to Brazil for business. One of my lifetime goals is to visit every continent, and I still have South America, Africa, and Antarctica left so this will knock one more off of the list! - Double my income and net worth from 2010
This is one of my stretch goals, but I think it is possible if everything goes the way I want it to this year. I have some other projects I am working on which I will talk about in another post that if they work out could get me pretty close to achieving this one. Wish me luck!
So there are my goals for 2011, now it is your turn. Let me know some of your top goals in the comments below!
Let’s have a great and prosperous 2011!

Sean,
You have some great goals for 2011. They are right in the area I like, they all seem to have varying degrees of, “challenge” to them, so they are not going to all be “easy” to reach, yet they are all doable with effort. great list.
You are also 10000% right with your statement that goals not written down will never be accomplished. Until then they are simply dreams and anyone would be very lucky to have their, “dreams” come true.

Thanks for the comment Steve! You would not believe how many people I have talked to over the last two weeks say they have goals, but only keep them in their head. They are also the ones that say that they can never get them accomplished. So how is that working out for them?
Hopefully I will be able to change some minds!
What uuuuuup Sean?
What a clear and concise way of setting and achieving goals. That is a great idead of posting your goals to your mirror so you see them everyday, as you say, so often goals get forgotten about. If we see our goals in writing on a daily basis then we are more likely to take action. And all it takes is to achive a goal is to take some form of action towards that particular goal every day.
I wish you every success in 2011

I started posting my goals on my mirror a few years ago because I couldn’t think of a way to remind myself to review them every day. This has worked out quite well though.
Hey Sean
Thanks for your transparency and letting us in on what you plan to accomplish this year. I hope 2011 brings you much success and adventure. I also like your list of what it takes to set meaningful and achievable goals.
Thanks for sharing,

Hi Sean,
A great set of goals and a sound methodology to achieve. We are terrible at holding ourselves accountable and turning the reins of accountability over to others is so much more effective. So now that you revealed your goals to the entire internet world, the pressure is on. Good luck and I’ll be following your progress.

Hi Sean!
Just wanted to wish you all the success for 2011 mate. Oh, and to tell you to cross off everything on your list after “Visit Australia” because once you get here you’ll not want anything more as you’ve made it to nirvana.
Kind regards,

Great post Sean and I totally agree. My goals are taped over my computer monitor so I can’t miss them. They are staring me in the face day in and day out…
I am also the kind of person who walks the walk and am not just all talk. When I put my mind to something, I see it through. It may take me baby steps to get there, but you have to start somewhere. That’s the way I like to look at things. You wake up every morning so make the decision to accomplish something today. Don’t waste it saying you’ll start tomorrow.
You’ve got some really great goals lined up there. You’ve given me a few to think about. I’m right there with you on the trip to Australia. I live in Texas too, can I stow away in your luggage???
I will make it there though, that is one of my goals.
Thanks for this great post and for the inspiration for us all to do better.

Adrienne,
Just like Steve said, once you make it there you won’t want to leave! Yes, posting my goals where I see them everyday has helped me immensely, you can’t claim you forgot when you have to see them everyday!
Great Post! You’ve got some really envious goals there. Listing them out here is a great way to hold yourself accountable. I think if you heed your own advice here with the EXCELLENT tips to accomplishing goals, you’ll be set to rock it for 2011!

Sean-
You have some great goals here. I love music so I am interested to see how you do with the piano. I play so if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Also if your looking for one check out pawn shops and craigslist. There is always stuff out there to buy cheap. A basic keyboard is always an option to start learning on as well. let me know if you have any questions.

Love it Sean. I always talk about goals and sometimes I write them down but they are never somewhere that I can see them. I think this weekend I’m going to use the WAM way of setting goals and pin them up on my new bulletin board that I just got for my office. And the other tips that you included will be really helpful!

Hi Sean,
Nice to meet you. Wow I like the flow of this post. This might just be the impetus that I need to write my own goals down. I hope writing them on TextEdit or Notepad counts.
Otherwise, the other thing that strikes me about the post is how you have just shared your goals with the entire world. That takes some guts man. Some audacious stuff man. Here’s to achieving your goals in 2011!

Writing my goals down and reviewing them every day has really helped me a lot. It keeps them fresh in my mind so they don’t get pushed to the background by day to day stuff. I am hoping sharing them with everyone also helps, the accountability should be awesome, and I plan on updating everyone each month on my progress. Hopefully the end of the year I will have a lot of check marks on my list!
I respect your point of view but I fundamentally disagree and oppose the traditional approach preached by all the “biz experts” and other members of the malarkey. For me its not about goals its about the process, which fundamentally changes everything. You dont write down a process, you do process. Attainable? Fuck that…why must my goals be attainable? Einstein said “I want to understand the way god thinks. Everything else is details”. I may be paraphrasing
Having said that, I love the list you came up with…I think its awesome.

I can understand your point, and I agree, if you aren’t trying to hit a goal and you are more interested in the journey, then it doesn’t really make much sense to write down and review your process. As Nike says, “Just do it.” That being said, since I am actually trying to reach the goals rather than enjoy the process of getting there, it has really helped me in the past to write them down and review them.

Hey Sean
I like your goals list. I’m a firm believer that writing them down, making them specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound is a good way of making sure you can nail them (the ‘SMART’ system).
However as a musician ( I play bass – spare me the jokes, I head them all
)I just wanna point out that ‘Learn to Play Piano’ needs to be reworked to be more measurable – it takes students around 900 practice hours to get to Grade 5 standard as measured in the UK – Grade 5 standard is OK. What I’d suggest you do is work out what you wanna do with the piano – do you jam some blues? Are you more of a jazz kind of guy? And rework your goals based on what you wanna actually play on the piano – learn to play piano on its own is a 5 Year Goal.
Be interested in your progress over the year.
Keep on keeping on.

My goal for the piano is to learn basic chords and be able to play a few songs by the end of the year. A bit of background, I played trumpet in school for about 9 years, so the musical side is there, I just have never played the piano. I am not interested in learning the classical way, so I picked up a course that teaches piano based on learning the chords and playing by ear. I have no illusions that I will be a great pianist, I just want to be able to play a bit. Plus I think a baby grand would look great in our house, and I really need to be able to play to justify it! I I will definitely keep you posted, I plan on posting an update to my goals at the end of each month, so stay tuned!
Thanks for the tips!

Hi Sean,
Great goals, thanks for sharing. I’m also aiming to learn Spanish this year, though I may have a slight advantage over you because I’ll be living in Spain for several months.
Just wondering, are you familiar with fluentin3months.com? That’s a great website with lots of unconventional language learning advice, most of it free. Highly recommended.
Good luck with everything this year. I’m sure you’ll do well.

Yes, you definitely have an advantage! If I were able I would go to a Spanish speaking country for a while, I lived in Germany for four years, and it is a lot easier if you are using the language every day. I will say however, once you stop using it regularly you also lose it pretty quick.
I have heard of the site, and I think I am going to start using it a lot more as I get further along.

Writing everything down has really helped me in the past and continues to today!
Hi Sean,
Great goal setting post and I’m proud to say that this is something
I did for myself about 9 weeks ago now…
I actually sat down and seriously set some goals for myself and my
online business. And yes, I DID write them down.
I have picked up something I didn’t do though, I didn’t include any
weight loss goals and as you are a lightweight compared to me I think
It’s something I really need to do something about starting NOW!
I’m away to work on some weight loss goals, this post could seriously
have had an effect on my health.

Very true on the point where you say set “attainable goals that you can measure” without the ability to measure and track progress one can be easily discouraged and give up toward reaching those goals. Some goals work better with a support system too, find others looking for similar results/goals and network and keep supporting each other with positive encouragement, ideas, tips…etc. They say working out with friends is the best for staying on target, the same can be true for bloggers working together to prompt each other to keep going.

I have been working on weight loss for a bit now, it is not easy to stick to especially if you like eating as much as I do! Good luck!
Hey Sean
Bite sized steps are definitely the way to go if you really want to reach your goals. My goals focus more around my business this yr rather than my personal aims, but after reading your post I realize that maybe it wouldn’t hurt me to get from behind this PC, and start getting to the gym, or swimming at least. All in all, since i started breaking my goals down and keeping a daily journal, my business has finally started making money.
Keep up the good work

Great list of goals here Sean, and great way to simply the SMART goal strategy as well.
I really like your idea of breaking the bigger goals into smaller ones. For new business owners this can be huge. If all you have are huge goals that are going to take a bit to achieve, then you don’t get those small victories that can keep you going through the tough times.

This has really helped me out in the past. You are exactly right, achieving small victories really helps keep the motivation up!
What incredible goals to set yourself and great advice. Goals breakdown because they are not attainable. It’s like starting a blog and saying that you will write 4 posts everyday – if you don’t hit 4 posts then it’s easy to just stop.
I didn’t write my goals down at the beginning of the year and have lapsed a little because of that.
How are you getting on with everything?
